Macbook Pro - Heat May Result in a Trip to Your Apple Retailer

One of the most common issues requiring a MacBook repair service is the problem of overheating. Like most compact or mobile devices, MacBook Pro heat is produced in several ways. When the battery is low, it requires a lot of power while charging, especially if the machine is in use. Consequently, the related components, i.e. the charger and the battery, heat up noticeably. This is not usually a problem, but where the casing either has the vent obstructed, or is placed on a surface that allows heat to build up, overheating may occur. Placing the laptop on top of furnishings or clothing insulates the casing and prevents adequate cooling/ventilation. The MacBook and MacBook Pro heat is controlled by the fan which will speed up as the machine gets hotter, eventually resulting in a loud fan noise.

Apple Macs are powerful machines with very slim profiles. This means that heat management is more difficult than with many other laptop designs. The aluminum casing of the MacBook Pro helps somewhat to get rid of excess heat more quickly than the common plastic casings found on lesser machines. If you hear loud fan noise or detect excessive heat from the casing and do not want a potentially expensive trip to your local Apple retailer or Mac repair shop you can take the following precautions;

·         Make sure the laptop is placed on a surface that does not allow heat buildup. This is especially important in relation to sunlight which can accelerate Macbook Pro heat buildup; if left in vehicles in direct sunlight, this can be made worse by the greenhouse effect of the glass. To prevent theft, laptops should be secured out of sight anyway.

·         Ensure the area around the hinges at the back of the machine is clear to allow hot air to be expelled from the casing.

·         Stop using the machine while it charges – using the machine adds heat to the interior due to CPU and memory chip load, which adds heat energy to the components inside the casing.

·         Use a laptop cooler to reduce MacBook Pro heat buildup. These handy devices offer extra cooling to the base of the casing. Although an extra item to carry about, a cooler can allow the use of the laptop on soft furnishings or other locations where heat buildup is an issue. Regardless, obstruction of the vent between the lid hinges will not be resolved by the use of a cooler or a visit to a Apple Authorized Repair Center.

·         Download and install some fan control software such as ‘SMCFanControl’, a free application that keeps tabs on the internal operating temperature.  This software can speed the fan up before MacBook Pro heat buildup becomes an issue.

Another reason to be aware of MacBook Pro heat build-up is that battery life can be severely reduced by constant heating and cooling cycles. Although excess heat can cause laptop batteries to have abrupt failure, MacBooks have resilient batteries.  The most likely symptom to emerge is the inability to hold a charge, with the problem worsening over time. If your battery has been getting too hot and your charge time is reducing, you should visit your Apple Authorized Repair Center (rather than an Apple retailer) to have it checked out and replaced before it fails completely. MacBook repair costs are very reasonable at an Apple Authorized Repair Center.  If you keep your MacBook serviced, it will offer a longer and more productive life.

Apple retailers are not usually MacBook repair centers.

If you have problems with your MacBook Pro heating up, you can return it to an Apple retailer.  But you may as well take the machine in directly for an Apple repair or service by an Apple Authorized Repair Center. Many Apple retailers do not do anything other than superficial repairs such as O/S upgrades. So if you need your MacBook repaired, it is quicker to take the machine directly to an Apple Authorized Repair Center where MacBook repair costs are lower as well.

MacBook Startup Problems? Advice from a Los Angeles Mac Repair Expert

Are you experiencing startup problems with your Mac? Macintosh computers are very reliable, but even the best made machines still have issues now and then, or as some Mac repair technicians see it – they get “cranky” . Your startup problems could be related to the hard drive, corruption within the OS user account, a bad battery or power supply, or even the logic board. Clues to the problem may be found by determining when the system fails and then isolating that area to find the solution. Start by unplugging any external disk drives, printers, or other external peripherals. Before you take your computer to an Apple dealer or a Los Angeles Mac repair shop, answering a few simple questions may help narrow down the type of Mac repair you may be dealing with. First of all, does your system turn on? If not, then you are likely dealing with a blown fuse, dead battery, bad logic board or a problem with your AC adaptor. A certified MacBook repair specialist can help you narrow down the exact cause of the problem and do the repair. Did you hear a popping sound? If so, then you may be dealing with a failed capacitor. Fortunately, a new power supply or AC adaptor will not be difficult or expensive for a Mac repair shop to replace. However, if you suspect your MacBook repair involves a dead or defective battery and your laptop has a removable battery, try taking it out before troubleshooting. A defective battery may prevent your laptop from booting, or if it fails to shut down after a crash, it could prevent a successful reboot. Depending on the nature of the problem, an Apple dealer may need to send your MacBook repair to an outside repair shop anyway, so it will probably be easier to start out with a repair shop that you trust, and deal directly with the technicians who will be fixing your computer. Mac repair shops will often recommend the use of Time Machine, a program that actually creates a complete backup of your system. Using Time Machine, in the event of a hard drive failure or corruption, Mac users can revert back to the last time their system was working properly. Is your MacBook slowing down with age? Perhaps the problem you’re dealing with is a slowing start time. Your Apple dealer or Mac repair shop may not have a specific solution for this, but there are some ways you can speed it up on your own. Remember, your MacBook or iMac must run through a whole lot of code before you see the startup page. The longer you use your computer, the more legacy programs it will need to sort through every time you turn it on. Your Apple dealer will often give you tips about how to fix this, but it is a whole lot simpler to delete unused programs, especially those programs that automatically boot up whenever you turn on your computer. Using an “uninstaller” program, such as AppDelete or AppZapper will clear out unwanted apps, including all the associated library files and definitions. How do you know which programs are loading up every time your Mac boots up? Simply go to Macintosh HD > Library > Startup Items and they will all be listed. You may want to delete the programs directly from this list, but be careful not to remove anything you may really need. Remember, deleting anything from this folder will affect all user accounts, not just your own. To see which programs are booting for a specific user, go to: apple Menu>System Preferences>Accounts, and then click on the “Login Items” tab for the desired account. Another suggestion that Mac repair shops often make is to offload larger media files and iTunes libraries to a secondary drive. These files take up much of your computer’s available hard drive storage space, and they can affect the overall performance of your Mac computer when the hard drive is near max capacity.
